History of culley's

The Culley’s family has a history spanning over 95 years in business. Culley’s Tea Rooms is just about as authentically Fremantle as you can get. Home of award-winning pies, pasties, sausage rolls, daily baked breads and fresh filled sandwiches not to forget Culley’s Horseshoe Rolls. This long-standing Fremantle café and bakery has no intentions of slowing down and remains dedicated to smooth table service.

Updated from its original look during the recent Atwell Arcade upgrade, Culley’s gleams with retro charm, with milk bar and warm jarrah finishes encompassing the same friendly style that has been delighting Culley’s patrons for years.

Our pies are made with a recipe that has been passed down through the Culley’s generations. The gravy has been a secret of our family for years. The gravy is made with a simple special selection of spices and stock, this is what gives the pies that moreish flavour people love. Our hand-made pastry is made daily with the best local ingredients. We want to make sure that the pastry in our pies tastes home-made every time, this is why our bakers take extra care when preparing each pie. Our pastry has been the same for generations.

The Culley’s Tearooms started as one of Perth’s first milk bars located on Stirling Highway in Cottesloe but they were looking for a larger premise. In a chance meeting on a train trip to Fremantle Alice Culley met Mrs Abbot who wanted to sell their confectionary shop in Fremantle. By the time the train reached the station an agreement had been reached and so with a good old fashion handshake deal  “Culley’s” almost 100-year association with Fremantle began.

The Culley’s story has been running for four generations. Dick and Ted took over from Edward and Alice, Darrell Culley and Bob Wegner continued the tradition, today the Culley’s business in the hands of Michael Culley and Melissa Culley.

Our Bakery

Our bakehouse runs 7 days a week to ensure the highest quality and freshness. By incorporating new age methods into our baking and continued training, our products consistently exceed customer standards.

Culley’s can guarantee that everything you enjoy at Culley’s Tearooms and lunch bars has been baked fresh by us locally. The key to the bakehouse is over 100 years of experience, the bakery staff have a great mix of expertise that ensures the Culley’s quality you know and love.

Our pies are made with a home made pastry like it has come straight out of the oven in your kitchen at home. We ensure that the pastry of every single pie is made to perfection every single time. Our pastry has been the same for generations.

The meat in our pies is the most important ingredient, this is why we source our meat from only the best Western Australian meat producers. Our Angus Beef is sourced from the Stirling Ranges and our Free-Range Chicken is sourced from the serene Mount Barker region.

We use 100% Millers flour which is milled right here in Byford Western Australia. Millers Foods are a 100% Australian owned and operated flour mill servicing the needs of the baking industry in Western Australia.
